How Does the Nordic Combined Triple Work?

A Nordic Combined competition always consists of a ski jump and a cross-country skiing race. Typically, two such competitions take place over a weekend. What makes Seefeld special is its three consecutive days of competition, hence the name “Triple.”

To prevent large time gaps that can occur when hosting three competitions back-to-back, a new format will be introduced in 2025 to keep the excitement high until the very end. Each of the three competition days will feature a different format. This guide will help you stay on top of it all!

In Brief

This year’s Triple kicks off with a brand-new approach – the mass start. Day two introduces the innovative Individual Compact format, and the event concludes with the tried-and-tested Individual Gundersen format.

Day 1: Mass Start – Fast-Paced Right from the Start

The Triple begins with an exciting mass start: all athletes start simultaneously and complete a cross-country race first (10 km for men, 5 km for women) before moving on to ski jumping. Cross-country times are converted into points, which are then deducted from the total score after ski jumping. The rules are simple: the fastest skier has no deductions from their jumping result, while following athletes have points deducted based on their time deficit (four seconds equal one point). The athletes with the highest total points after jumping are the day’s winners.

Day 2: Individual Compact – A Test of Strategy

The second competition day features the new Individual Compact format. Here, athletes begin with one ski jump and then proceed to a cross-country race (7.5 km for men, 5 km for women). Starting positions for the race are based on the jumping results: the leader starts at 0 seconds, followed by other athletes with fixed time intervals that gradually decrease further down the rankings. For example, the second-place jumper starts six seconds behind the leader, the third-place jumper another six seconds later, and so on. Starting gaps between athletes shrink as rankings drop, keeping the field tightly packed and the race thrilling. The first athlete to cross the finish line wins the day.

Day 3: Individual Gundersen – The Grand Finale

The third day showcases the classic Individual Gundersen format. The process is similar to the Compact format, but here, actual time deficits from the jumping results are carried into the cross-country race (12.5 km for men, 7.5 km for women). The rule is simple: one point behind in jumping equals four seconds behind on the track. The first athlete to cross the finish line is the day’s winner and the overall Triple champion!

Good to Know – Outstanding Performances Are Rewarded

Great performances on one day are rewarded on the next! Points deficits from Day 1 are factored into the ski jumping results on Day 2. From Day 2 to Day 3, both point and time deficits from the cross-country race are carried over. This means it’s crucial to stay near the front on the first two days to have a shot at the Triple title on the final day. Even with the new system keeping the field closer together, guaranteeing more excitement, strong early performances can make all the difference.

An Event for the History Books

The revamped Triple format in Seefeld 2025 breathes fresh life into Nordic Combined and marks a significant step forward for the sport – for both men and women. Spectators can look forward to three days of action, strategy, and thrilling battles.
