KiS – Contemporary Art in Seefeld
Over the course of her nearly 45-year artistic career, Sherrie Levine (*1947) has increasingly distanced herself from art theories and movements, developing her own artistic language that does not shy away from the morbid or grotesque – expressing the artist’s affinity for slapstick. “I like the territory of slapstick, where amidst general laughter neither death nor crime exists,” these are Levine's comments on the group "The Three Furies".
This softening of boundaries, where “neither death nor crime exists,” is also evident in the sculptures of animal skeletons and skulls, for which Sherrie Levine uses noble materials like glass or polished bronze. As curator Kay Heymer writes in the catalog for the exhibition “After All” at the Neues Museum Nürnberg, Sherrie Levine plays in her work with “the tension between art’s sublimity and commercialism.” Her works are “memorable, entertaining, and unsettling at the same time.”
At KiS – Art in Seefeld, Rafael Jablonka presents works from 1988 to 2008 from his rich collection. The photographs, paintings, and bronze sculptures illustrate the diverse oeuvre of Sherrie Levine.
