Anyone who knows the legendary "Karwendelmarsch" is of course also familiar with the spectacular Karwendel Gorge (Karwendelschlucht). It is located not far from the small Birzl chapel directly in the Karwendel valley above Scharnitz and is even easily accessible by foot. The panoramic ascent rewards with spectacular views over the countless peaks and side valleys of Austria's largest nature park.
Of course, the gorge can also be admired away from the heroic Karwendel crossing over 52 kilometers: An idyllic circular hike leads from the Scharnitz Nature Park Info Center via the Birzl Chapel to the Karwendelsteg. Directly below, the turquoise-blue Karwendelbach stream thunders through the eternal rock, carving the impressive gorge into the porous Wetterstein limestone. The gorge hike leads along adventurous rock formations, thundering waterfalls and untouched natural beauty, and on the way back you can always make a short detour to the Scharnitzer Alm.
