Leutasch was first mentioned in documents in the 12th century. At that time, the nobility of Weilheim had substantial land ownership in the Oberleutasch area, while the lords of Werdenfels exercised sovereignty rights in the Unterleutasch. Bernhard of Weilheim donated part of his property consisting of forest and fields in the Oberleutasch to the Augustinian Canons' Monastery Polling near Weilheim in 1178, which constructed a church dedicated to St. Magdalena in the middle of the valley in 1190, expanded in 1500 and 1725.

The current building was erected in 1820/21 under the pastoral care of Franz Sieß, who managed the parish from 1810 to 1836, following the plans of the sculptor and master draftsman Josef Falbesoner from Nassereith, and was consecrated in 1831 by Prince Bishop Galura of Brixen.

The imposing classical high altar once belonged to the monastery of Benediktbeuren in Bavaria, which was dissolved in 1803. The colorful, artistic ceiling paintings and the high altar painting were created by Leopold Puellacher (1776 – 1842).
