The probably smallest connected ski area in the world
Sometimes it's the little things that bring us the greatest joy. Even if skiing isn’t the first thing that comes to mind – in Seefeld, this saying is more true than you might think. Here, you’ll find what is probably the smallest ski link in the world! Nestled in the Tyrolean mountains, two 'micro ski areas' come together to create a special place that brings back memories of the (ski) days of the past.
As a passionate skier, I regularly enjoy the double-digit kilometers of slopes and high-tech lifts of the Alps, but Seefeld will always be the place where it all began for me. My first turns, my first time doing the 'pizza and fries' technique, and of course, my first falls all happened here. Depending on my mood, my parents would pick a side of the 'Seefeld ski hill', and before I knew it, I was on my skis. The two small ski areas, called Birkenlift and Geigenbügel, are located right in the middle of Seefeld and were always super easy for us to reach. When I drive past this hill today, where everything started, it still looks just like it did back then. Children are bustling around on both sides, having the time of their lives, the tow lifts and magic carpets are doing their job, and parents are watching from a safe distance. To me, it feels like time has truly stood still. But my feeling deceives me! In my absence, something truly beautiful has happened.
A Wedding Without Church Bells
In December 2022, a big wedding took place on the hill where I learned to ski – without an officiant or church bells! The two ski areas, which have shared the same hill their entire lives, entered into a lifelong union and have since merged to become what is probably the smallest ski link in the world. It's a beautiful story that even the future ski pros and snowboard artists enjoy. Three tow lifts, six conveyor belts, a rope lift, and even a carousel provide plenty of variety while learning parallel turns and impressing the parents. The parents, in turn, are thrilled by the manageable size, safety, and the warm, welcoming atmosphere right in the heart of the village as they watch their little ones take their first rides.
The Only True Hip Swing
The feel-good factor also applies to the many adults eager to learn, who blend in with the groups of children. Since you don’t find ideal learning conditions everywhere like you do here, many Seefeld vacationers prefer to practice their hip swing with skis under their feet, rather than during après-ski at the mountain hut. If one side gets boring, just hop on the conveyor belt to the other side of the hill and the adventure starts all over again. Even though it can't boast endless slopes or 25 different lifts, Birkenlift and Geigenbühel offer everything a beginner skier needs: gentle slopes, good snow conditions, and plenty of sunshine. And all of this right in the heart of the village! Geigenbühel is within walking distance of many accommodations – it doesn’t get more convenient than that.
Came for the Slopes, Stayed for the Atmosphere
Those who learn to ski here will not only love the slopes but also the atmosphere. The little ones get their own lift pass and the professional support of local ski instructors – and so the parents can enjoy a few runs on their own, there’s also loving childcare available. And the lift attendants? They greet you with a smile and help the little ones catch the lift, just like in the good old days. While the parents relax in the sun and reminisce, the children make their first turns on the slopes. In Seefeld, it’s not about going higher, faster, or farther – it’s about having a good time together. Whether on the ski hill, on the cross-country track, or winter hiking.
Just a Stone’s Throw Away
For those who have outgrown their children's (ski) boots, there are new challenges to tackle. The equally family-friendly ski areas of Gschwandtkopf, Rosshütte, and Katzenkopf are just a stone’s throw away. The Seefeld region shows that it doesn’t always have to be the big ski resorts. Sometimes it’s the small, charming places that offer the most beautiful experiences. So strap on your skis, let yourself (like me) be swept away by nostalgia, and enjoy what is probably the smallest – and most charming – ski link in the world.
