Winter idyll Wildmoos: The place between the places
Surrounded by unspoiled nature and a fantastic mountain panorama, the Wildmoos nature reserve is a little bit between worlds. A wonderland between Seefeld and Mösern with exciting natural phenomena, magnificent views and idyllic lakes.
Wildmoos is a real paradise for those who love to be out in nature and perfect for really everyone. Walkers, (long-distance) hikers and cross-country skiers, culinary and other connoisseurs. The declared destination for many is the Wildmoosalm, a natural idyll without equal. From the clear mountain water to the home cooking, Tyrol is at home here, in summer surrounded by green moss and lush alpine herbs, in winter the starting and/or end point for hikes on foot, with snowshoes or on skis. The cross-country skiing trail leads directly past the charming, quaint alpine hut. If you go the way on foot – from the Seefeld center it is about 40 minutes –, it meanders gently up the forest; who likes, arrives comfortably and romantically with the horse-drawn carriage. In addition, the Wildmoos bus also runs from Seefeld up to the alp.
A fairy tale mystery
Around the Wildmoosalm, when they are not covered with lush blankets of snow, fresh alpine herb meadows stretch out, spectacular panoramas open eyes and hearts alike and not far from the hut a real natural phenomenon opens up from time to time with the Lotten and Wildmoos lakes. Seemingly out of nowhere, two mountain lakes suddenly form in the midst of meadows, larch and birch forests, only to disappear again as quickly as they had appeared. This aperiodic natural wonder is probably due to a complex interaction of spring precipitation and snowmelt water in underground karst systems. When the spring thaw sets in, the underground vessels (karsts) thus fill with water, and the overflow floods the meadow depressions, forming lakes there, but these often disappear after a few weeks. In some years, due to underground springs, the water level continues to rise even after the snow melts – an impressive natural spectacle, the exact causes of which remain a mystery to this day.
The spectacle can be observed particularly well from the Lottensee hut, which is about 40 minutes away from the Wildmoosalm or can be reached in about the same time from the other side, i.e. from Mösern. Lottensee has been owned by the Kluckner family since 1949. The neat, associated snack station was built by Grandpa Josef in 1968 and is still a popular year-round destination for pleasure hikers, gourmets, (e-)bikers and cross-country skiers. During the deep snowy winter months, a cross-country ski trail also leads directly past here, running around the glistening Lottensee and through the wildly romantic winter landscape.
Many roads lead to Wildmoos
Wild moss can be explored in many different ways. In small pieces, always new, always different, or right away in its entirety. The entire Wildmoos circuit leads through idyllic winter landscapes and takes about three and a half hours of beautiful hiking. The snowy panoramic circuit around the Brunschkopf, which is enthroned in the middle, passes several lakes and three huts for the seduction of all senses. The enchanting winter hike leads for eleven kilometers without any notable climbs through deeply snow-covered forests that open up again and again for lush far-reaching views.
Wildmoos in the Seefeld region in winter
If you come by car, you can park for a fee directly at the small Möserer See parking lot (attention: small contingent) and walk from there a short distance along the gravel path to the starting point at Möserer See. The actual hike begins with a leisurely round around the snow-covered forest lake and is rewarded with a first rest on the sun terrace of the Möserer Seestub'n. With a romantic view of the lake, it is recommended to enjoy a cup of mulled wine, Jagatee or punch here, which warms the body from the inside and equally the soul. In addition, there are homemade cake and strudel variations. Afterwards you go well strengthened back to the crossroads and there left on the hiking trail in the direction of Wildmoosalm. Then you walk comfortably through the Lehenwald forest above the snow-covered Möserer Mähder (mountain meadows). Accompanied by a magnificent view over Seefeld and the Gschwandtkopf, the hiking trail makes a wide loop until it changes to the winter road shortly before the Wildmoosalm.
Tasty delicacies in the snow
The small round at the alpine pasture can already be marked for a digestive walk, because the Wildmoosalm seduces with tasty Tyrolean hut specialties from in-house production: from Kasknödel to Gröstl with cabbage salad to Kaiserschmarrn, even homemade doughnuts please palate and stomach. Afterwards it goes comfortably further to the Lottensee, with gentle gradient the broad footpath goes quasi as by itself. At the turnoff to the vacation home at the Wildmoossee you keep to the left and pass the two lakes through the forest, if they are visible at the moment. Finally, the Lottenseehütte invites you to take a short break and enjoy a digestive schnapps – or coffee – and a second dessert in the warm parlor.
Long Distance Hiking Stage 3 Winter Landscape
With the most panoramic section of the snow-covered lake circuit, the Pirschsteig trail a little above the road then rewards you with impressive views of the Inn Valley and wintry mountain scenery on the entire way back. In Mösern, the forest trail joins the Broch trail and continues in a straight line to the starting point at Lake Mösern. Panorama, idyll, natural spectacle, movement, relaxation, culinary delights ... winter hiking heart, what more do you want?

OUTLOOK: In the middle of the nature idyll Wildmoos lies the Brunschkopf, which invites you to wonderful hikes in winter as well as in summer. The snowshoe hike of about five kilometers from the Wildmoosalm over the panorama path to the viewing platform and over the Möserer Höhe back to Mösern is beautiful. The viewing platform opens up a breathtaking mountain panorama that can be enjoyed crystal clear with the help of top-class Swarovski binoculars.
